Course Overview
This qualification is designed for experienced technicians who want to become MOT Testers for light vehicles. It provides the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence needed to carry out MOT inspections safely, accurately, and in line with DVSA standards.
Delivered in a hands-on workshop environment at our Surrey training centre, this course combines essential theory with practical training. You will develop a clear understanding of the MOT testing process, including inspection procedures, defect categorisation, and professional responsibilities within an authorised test station.
On successful completion, you will be ready to progress to the DVSA observation assessment and take the next step towards becoming a fully qualified MOT Tester.
Course Aims
This course aims to:
- Develop the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out MOT testing for Class 4 (cars and light vans) and Class 7 (goods vehicles up to 3,500kg) in line with DVSA standards.
- Ensure learners understand and can apply the current MOT Testing Guide, Inspection Manual, and Special Notices.
- Prepare technicians to complete MOT inspections accurately, safely, and compliantly within an authorised test station environment.
How Will You Be Assessed?
Assessment includes:
- An online multiple-choice exam completed at the end of the course.
- Practical direct observation of a simulated MOT test, including the use of an assistant.
Qualification
Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4 and 7)
Progression Route
After completing the qualification, learners can progress to the DVSA Observation Assessment (VT8), which is required to become a Nominated MOT Tester.
Entry Requirements
Before you join this course you must be able to provide evidence for the below:
- A current DBS certificate (have no unspent convictions for criminal offences as described in Appendix 7 of the MOT Testing Guide.)
- A current and full UK driving licence for a vehicle class within the test group to be tested.
- An appropriate qualification. For details relating to this please see a list of suitable qualifications.
- Learners must provide evidence that they have 4 years full-time employment experience permitted by law. This should be done by providing their employment history using “Get proof of employment history – GOV.UK“
- Not be currently suspended or disqualified from MOT testing and be of good repute as described in Appendix 7 of the MOT Testing Guide.
- Personally create an account on the MOT Testing Service.
You will be provided with a section to upload these documents upon completing the payments section of your booking form. All documents must be uploaded no less than 30 days before the course begins. Failure to do so may result in you not being allowed to attend the training sessions.
